Well another one down. I'm about halfway through the MTC and to commemorate this joyous occasion, my body decided to go and get sick on me. I was stuck in the room for a few days with the most painful sore throat and head cold of my life. So fun. You should try it sometime. Luckily Elder Mead was sick too so we commiserated together.
In between trying to go to class and meals a few times, I had a great time trying to sleep and drink water at the doctor's order with multiple small volcanoes in my throat. Finally, on Sunday, I pushed through all the early morning branch meetings with a few thousand ibuprofen and sudafed. I felt pretty good, but once it wore off, I crashed hard. At dinner, they had Graham Canyon. Boy that stuff is manna. It soothed my throat and I've felt pretty good ever since.
Cantonese is still rough, but I'm giving it the gas. I somehow found a lot of down time to study this week and made a lot if progress with vocabulary. I'm finally getting close to being able to teach in Cantonese what I would in English. Hopefully I will be able to get more practice this week. I got a Boogie Board in the mail (like an electric whiteboard) and that is a super great help for memorizing things like the first vision.
There were a few bright spots in the week. The first was rediscovering Elder Wirthlin's talk "Come What May and Love it". At first, I was like "how can I love being sick like this?" But now that I'm getting better, I realized I can now love how well prepared I am now if I get sick again in the future. The second bright spot was the devotional was by the woman who was the principle author of Adjusting to Missionary Life. She gave a great talk about how we can change our mindset to see setbacks as learning opportunities instead of failures. Super inspiring.
Things in Hong Kong seem to be heating up. We don't get a lot of news, but the stuff we hear doesn't sound too great. We haven't heard anything new from the mission president, but I'm sure he's very aware of the situation. For now, we are just going to keep plucking along. I have a bet with Elder Yee about if we will get to Hong Kong on time or not. It's a win win because if we don't get to Hong Kong on time, I get five bucks. But if we do get to Hong Kong on time, I'm out five bucks, but I'm also in Hong Kong.
Anyways, I hope this next week will be better and I'll have some more fun things to report. See you in a while!
Elder Murray
